Electronics Room

Electronics Room

Wiki

Overview

The Electronics Room is dedicated to member projects involving electronics. This space features multiple “clean table” stations for soldering, tools for electronic work, and electronic components available for member projects. The workstations have permanently installed anti-static mats installed, and wrist straps available. Please, do not solder directly on the anti-static mats and turn off the soldering irons when not in use!

How to use this space

This is a shared space, you share it with your friends. Please leave it as good or better than you found it. This space is currently shared with stained glass since it has the fume extractor.

  • Turn off the soldering irons when you’re finished! Safety must be our #1 priority, ALWAYS. Leaving an iron on when you’re not using the station is a fire hazard, and a burn hazard for the next person coming through to use the space, will reduce the lifetime of the components, and is a waste of energy.
  • Do not solder directly on the anti-static mats – they are for protecting against ESD (electrostatic discharge), not for protecting the workstation surface from solder. Place a protective covering over the mats before soldering!
  • Do not leave your projects on the workspaces when you’re not actively working on them. Using our thinking caps – taking a short break is ok, but if you’re leaving for lunch, put a sign with your slack name and estimated return time. Leaving your project overnight is unacceptable and reduces the usability of the space for others.
  • Put equipment back where you found it. This makes it easier for the next person to find the equipment they need to use.
  • Clean up after yourself when you’re done with the space. Clutter begets clutters. Throw away all your trash when you’re done. This includes clippings from wires, drippings of solder, etc. Turn off all electrical equipment (like soldering irons!) Leave the space better than you found it.
  • Did I forget to mention turning off the soldering irons when you’re done? We find the soldering irons left on at least monthly. Seriously. Turn them off when you’re done.
