January 2026 Textiles Sig Meeting 

Tuesday, January 13th 6:00PM – 7:30PM

Meeting start – quick intro of everyone with names (5 minutes)

Budget approval – breakdown of budget (5 minutes, informative)

  • $1800 to machine repairs
  • $1600 to consumable replacements
  • $700 to organization
  • $1000 to class supplies
  • $900 for catering for SIG meetings 

Year focus overview (quick, 5 minute overview) 

  • Basics quarter 
    • Intentional classes focused on specific skills designed to help people make garments and items that are more complicated 
    • Repairs on items from home, teaching how to reuse things
    • Fabric pressing, measurement, light garment drafting
  • Cosplay quarter
    • Focus on collaborating with 3D printing and laser SIGs 
    • Garment construction – sleeves, structured layers, edge finishes 
    • Attaching 3D prints or EVA foam to garments 
    • Professional class – cosplay focus + eva focus (2 classes) 
  • Ren Faire quarter
    • Focus on leatherworking – another 3D printing and laser SIG focus
    • Leather cutting class + laser leather cutting
    • Professional class for leathermaking
    • Weathering 
  • Holiday quarter 
    • Unique structural base for masks, large wing elements, furry masks, etc
    • Functional items for gift giving and personal use 
    • Fitting class to assist with Halloween costumes 
    • Open working hours to assist with costume making

Quarterly focus for Jan-Feb-March (5 minute overview) 

  • Focus is basics – how to install zippers, buttons, snaps 
  • How to hem clothing, how to repair simple tears
  • Finishing techniques – piping, bias tape, binding 
  • Fabric pressing, measurement for garment making, easy full day garment making class (focus on pants atm) 

Classes – authorization / instructional (15 minutes combined) 

  • Industrial Sewing Machine (2 classes)
  • Home sewing machine (1 class)
  • Serger (1 class)

Classes – make and take / workshop 

  • Make and take – Sable (sunday class in feb for upholstery), Logan
  • Thursday the 5th – Lauren – 7 to 9 
    • Fruit pillows 
    • 27th of Feb – upcycling – tote bags
  • Workshop – Jamie Feb 22nd – 11-3 
  • Measuring – Mohr & Jamie Feb 21st Time: 11-3 
  • Pocket installs – Kelsey 
  • Professional – N/A 

Train the trainer for Feb/March 

  • Feb or March – do we want to split it by machine? Google form for sign up and machine interest selection to determine schedule? 

Hackdenhac day: (15 minutes to allow discussion and additions)

  • Assign a person a machine to get manuals for, pics of, and do a quick write up with a guide to follow – use this to update all the wiki pages at once
  • Take pictures of each space and list what goes there with more specific pictures. This will allow people to easily find & reset things and will go on the wiki
    • Photo on machines 
  • Instructional information – for those who will be training and are also at hackdenhac day
    • Industrial serger, home serger (both), home sewing machines (both), all embroidery machines 
    • The above is done by the instructors but if people are cool doing research and dropping info in a Google doc for us to review later that would be a huge help!

  • Ian – maybe try to move secretary table thing (not this hackdenhac day)
  • Cover the table with muslin (muslin is ordered) 
  • Stand the fabric bolts upright 
    • Have a dedicated spot for personal fabric to ensure there is no hacking – will have tags named 
    • Vinyl one 
    • Pattern paper one
  • Table cleanup dedication area 

Embroidery Machine 7 needle (15 minutes to allow discussion)

  • how is training going to work going forward
    • Repair person suggests small classes and emphasis on explaining when and how to change the tension. Will be trying to complete tension visual guides. 
  • how we will handle those currently trained 
    • quick training day to confirm competency before getting signed off again
    • Outreach to those currently trained to get real world information for guide
  • Acknowledge the disability thing -> see if there’s a possibility if anyone knows signing  

General discussion points: (20 minutes or whatever time we have left) 

  • QR code to Google form for textile area suggestions
    • Reviewed before each meeting and put in as discussion, posted with the agenda the weekend before the sig meeting 
  • Regular clean up added to each class – 10 minutes at end of class to clean space for everyone
  • Pause project signalling – other areas post in slack, opinions?
    • Discussion points: how long, where to store, how to show a pause
      • The garment rack 
      • Name and date – maybe a ribbon / tag 
      • Storage up to a month      
      • Tote box for storage – 24 hour if you need to run / dump 
    • Project storage
  • Move meeting time -> 6 to 630 to 8 
    • Reason: allow people more time to get here from work
  • Hat press machine – Doug Miller posted in Slack asking if this would be something we could buy. Alternatives: One | Two
    • Discussion points: 
      • How many people would use this? 
      • Do we have anything that could be used instead?
    • Present to board -> have two weeks to look into option
      • Sublimation 
  • Denhac storage policy 
    • Putting this at the end so those interested can do a floor walk for additional hackdenhac day items
