March 2026 Textiles Sig Meeting 

Tuesday, March 17th 6:30PM – 8:00PM

 

Meeting start – quick intro of everyone with names (5 minutes)

Budget update – breakdown of current budget (5 minutes, informative)

  • IOU because we’re still figuring out how to easily track our budget since we don’t have visibility into all purchases via Ramp + Amazon

Year focus overview (quick, 5 minute overview) 

  • Basics quarter 
  • Cosplay quarter
    • Focus on collaborating with 3D printing and laser SIGs 
    • Garment construction – sleeves, structured layers, edge finishes 
    • Attaching 3D prints or EVA foam to garments 
    • Professional class – cosplay focus + eva focus (2 classes) 
  • Ren Faire quarter
    • Focus on leatherworking – another 3D printing and laser SIG focus
    • Leather cutting class + laser leather cutting 
    • Professional class for leathermaking
    • Weathering 
  • Holiday quarter 
    • Unique structural base for masks, large wing elements, furry masks, etc
    • Functional items for gift giving and personal use 
    • Fitting class to assist with Halloween costumes 
    • Open working hours to assist with costume making

Quarterly focus for April-May-June (5 minute overview) 

  • Cosplay focus, meaning learning how to make and adjust garments 
  • Attach items to clothes using embroidery, cricut, and sewing
  • Emphasis on using industrial machine and sergers
  • Garment construction – skirts, pants, attaching zippers and sleeves
  • Work with us office hours for on the spot assistance

    • Screen printing make and take! 
  • Potential classes:
    • Instructional: disability in cosplay – using tricks to make cosplay more disability friendly with picture and item examples (examples of items to use, not done projects) magnets, snaps, magic release and other quick release tricks is a very in depth topic that I think we can tie those two together  
    • Fabric introduction – what they feel like and what to use them with  
  • Monthly general themes
    • April garment construction
    • May stretch material/ alterations
    • June unusual construction/really big proportions/ unique designs as fashion.

Train the trainer for Feb/March  

  • Set up April 7 needle embroidery training – Daniel + Robin for sure

Hackdenhac day: (15 minutes to allow discussion and additions)(28th) 

  • Iron area
    • Jamie and Mohr got this 
  • Clean the table area container 
  • Outlet focus 
    • Every breakline station will have pulldown cords instead
    • Irons on at the same time will cause issues
  • Build the sewing machine kits and make the fabric holders
  • Timer plugs 

 

Updates:

  • Updated Wiki page showcasing where everything lives
  • New instructors & classes! – Robin + Anisha + Kate 
  • Trying to get together a list of everyone with training privileges 

General discussion points: (20 minutes or whatever time we have left) 

  • Iron doesn’t automatically turn off if left on, how can we install a timer to prevent this?
    • Mohr will handle timer thing 
  • April focus 
    • Tufting classes as a big focus for March / April ←- can anyone do this?
    • Cricut is a big focus this month as it allows for cosplay customization 
  • Leather making sewing machine – Jamie 
  • Making for good – Sam suggested a make toy drive but also we could do this for seniors / people with disabilities / etc 
    • Maybe once a quarter we could all bring machines and set up to make for the community? Patterns would be provided, maybe some precut fabric etc? 
    • Toys for cats – Andrew 
  • First round of conversation about air brushing 
    • Air brush station in the tent 
    • Own a good air brush 
      • Purchased by denhac
      • Iwata is the one that’s good
      • There is a cheaper one 
      • Air brush compressor has also been donated 
    • Has plenty of stuff but needs space for an organization
    • Office cubical size that would have enough room to go in and do the air brushing – filter on the wall – good quality filter 
      • Filter on the outgoing air 
      • Talk to resin about filters 
      • Filters can be washed
    • Acrylic paints because they’re non toxic 
    • Potential: enclosed filtered box for air brushing 
    • Otherwise, will need a fume hood or flow hood 
    • The sealing aspect is very important 
      • Plywood would be fine
    • Do need lighting 
    • Might need to update the permit 
      • Permitting and zoning for it in textiles 
    • Putting up drywall in the resin tent 
    • Small compression
