Textiles SIG June 2026 Meeting Notes

June Textiles Sig Meeting 

Tuesday, June 16th 6:30PM – 8:00PM

Meeting start – quick intro of everyone with names (5 minutes)

Order updates 

• Leatherworking station

• Ordered all items discussed in prior sig meeting

• We now stock interfacing in light, medium, and heavy weight. Total $90

Year focus overview (5 minutes)

• Basics quarter
• Cosplay quarter
• Ren Faire quarter
  • Focus on leatherworking
  • Leather cutting class + laser leather cutting
  • Professional class for leathermaking
  • Weathering
• Holiday quarter
  • Unique structural base for masks, large wing elements, furry masks, etc
  • Functional items for gift giving and personal use
  • Fitting class to assist with Halloween costumes
  • Open working hours to assist with costume making

Quarterly focus for July – August – September (5 minutes)

• Attach items to clothes using embroidery, cricut, and sewing
• Emphasis on using industrial machine and sergers
• Work with us office hours for on the spot assistance
• Whimsy – how to make your wardrobe more whimsical 
• Monthly general themes:

Classes – make and take / workshop

• Make and take

  • Leather overview – what we have, what the tools are, etc 
• Body double Sundays – hangout and sew / coworking
• Maybe more demos – gauge interest, no formal class needed to start, then create the class from there
• Write a blurb for instructors about each class – showcase what’s available and what skills attendees will walk away with

Big area discussions

Embroidery area:

• Stabilizer has been ordered 
• Doc has been created 
• Training classes have been run 
• Class schedule for actual classes?
• Organization – specifically, for all of the spools. 
  • 3ft long shelf to store things – maybe under desk or computer desk 
  • Removing the single needle freed up space, how can we use it? 
  • How to store the stabilizer 
    • How to make sure it stays separate from the interfacing for sewing 
    • Paper towel holder 
• Purchase a USB stick and tie it up 
• New authorization required 
  • Patch saying you need to get authorized 
  • Authorizations before 6/26 not valid 

Leatherworking area: 

• What do we still need?
  • Don’t buy leather 
  • Edge treatment ??? no burnishing paste, no bevelers, glue burs? Stamps = no 
  • Hole punches and such 
  • Bladed tools that aren’t scapals

  • Maybe hanging storage off of doors

• This does not seem to be working well – how can we improve it?

Knitting Machine

Hackdenhac Day (15 minutes for discussion and additions)(28th)

• Work towards leatherworking station
  • Clean off leatherworking station of all non leather working items 
• Move all embroidery thread over to embroidery station
  • Move Denhac rug elsewhere to make room
• Remove as many random unassigned knickknacks from SIG textile as possible
• Figure out organization for both leatherworking and embroidery
• Putting more fabric on bolts 
• Inventory current domestic sewing machine feet collection 

Things we want done:

• De-lint the machine
• LABEL THE IRON FOR WATER TYPE
  • Jugs of distilled water will live under the irons – label them
  • Write an iron maintenance wiki and print it out as a pamphlet to attach to the iron
  • Professional iron doesn’t play on circuit with any other iron 
    • Do not plug into the pull down cord – limit one iron 

General discussion points (20 minutes or whatever time we have left)

• Looking for someone who will help us do an overall of the wiki – Anna
• Shopping list
  • Iron to replace the one Mohr had – probably $200 
  • $300 approved for the leatherworking and embroidery 
• Cricut discussion overall 
  • Can someone figure out what we have and categorize it?
