Online Stores

Patterns

The “Big Four” pattern makers are Simplicity, Butterick, McCall’s, and Vogue. If you find a tissue paper pattern in a store, it is likely from one of these companies. Denhac, Recreative, and Sewn Denver all have these in stock. Be sure to double check which size it is, and the exact measurements of that size, as sizing has changed over time. To search and buy these patterns online, only Simplicity still has its own website, where you can buy patterns from all four companies; sites for the other three companies redirect to this Amazon page, where you can filter by brand.

Etsy sells sewing patterns, but please exercise caution when purchasing any pattern from there, as they could be AI generated. AI patterns are unlikely to turn out like the pictures show. Some signs that you can trust an Etsy store are:

  • all the clothes are modelled by the same 1-3 people (the seller and their friends)
  • video or written instructions are included
  • the line art matches the clothes (there are darts in the clothes where the drawing says there should be, etc)
  • there aren’t hundreds upon hundreds of patterns
  • it’s an older store
  • the patterns are more than $5
  • positive reviews from people who have made the pattern and included pictures

If you’re unsure you can post a link in Slack and ask for second opinions. We’re working on building our own library of patterns and trusted sellers.

Threadloop can be a good place to browse patterns, it’s an aggregator with links to buy the patterns you see and a number of useful filters.
