This week at Denhac! (Oct 7 – Oct 13)

Oh my goodness! There is a lot going on this week in addition to our regularly scheduled programming! We have a guest speaker, open house and a class on Saturday and two kids classes on Sunday! We’re doing all the things!

do-all-the-science

Monday, October 7: {}

Tuesday, October 8, 8 p.m.: Open House! This is your best opportunity to come see what we’re all about because I can guarantee a handful of members will be hanging around and at least one will give you a tour of the space. RSVP on Meet Up.

Tuesday, October 8, 8 p.m.: Locksport! This meeting is free and open to the public so if you want to learn to pick locks or just have an interesting lock you’d like to show off, come on by. We have a box full of locks and plenty of picks to go around! RSVP on Meet Up.

Wednesday, October 9: {}

Thursday, October 10, 9 a.m.: Work From Denhac Day! Get out of your mom’s basement and into Denhac for Work From Denhac Day! Members and non-members alike who work remotely are welcome and encouraged to come to Denhac to work instead. We have a refrigerator, a bathroom and the internetz. What more could you need?! RSVP on Meet Up.

Friday, October 11, 8 p.m.: Game Night! After a hard week of work what could be better than hanging out at your favorite hackerspace and playing games? If you said nothing then you’re right! Join us for card games, board games, video games, or maybe a movie. We watched Smokey and The Bandit last week. Who knows where the night might take us this week? RSVP on Meet Up.

Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.: LPIC-2 Study Group!

Saturday, October 12, 12 p.m.: Open House! New and improved Open House, now with more Saturday! Join us, won’t you? :D

Saturday, October 12, 1 p.m.: Advanced Soldering with The Sicilian (AKA Matt S.)! Details and suggested materials list coming soon but if Matt’s teaching it it’s sure to be fun and informative.

*update* A message from The Sicilian:

I’ll be teaching how to solder large (100+ pin) fine pitch surface mount chips. It’s OK if you’ve never soldered SMT before, but you should know how to solder thru-hole and be able to get good joints every time; I’m not going to cover the basics in this class at all.

There are no materials required. Your project will be to install a large, fine pitch chip (anything from QFP-100 to QFP-208 or TSSOP-32 to TSSOP-56) on a reworked, prepopulated board. I’ll be de-chipping and cleaning some old NICs and video cards, and we will be plugging your project in and verifying functionality at the end.

Since we only have two really good soldering irons, we may have to do more than one shift. I’d like to get a RSVP from anyone who will be wanting to attend hands-on. Spectators are also welcome, no need to RSVP for that.

AWESOME THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR NEW SKILLZ:

  •  Make a 128MB Xbox for emulating Dem Classix
  • Make awesome SNES carts (Starfox 2, Mother 2, Seiken Densetsu 3, Final Fantasy 5, etc.)
  • Mess with the cable / phone company. They think just because something is on an EEPROM that’s soldered down, it’s safe. Ha!
  • World Domination through embedded hardware!

                 -Matt

RSVP on Meet Up.

Saturday, October 12, 5 p.m.: Guest Speaker Jeff Del Papa (AKA DP) of New England Rubbish Deconstruction Society! We have a special guest speaker this Saturday from the New England Rubbish Deconstruction Society (AKA the NERDS)! Jeff Del Papa of the group is visiting Colorado and will be touring the local hackerspaces. Their group has competed in Junkyard Wars and he will be showing us a never-broadcast-in-the-US episode of Junkyard Wars (and giving us the details of what “really” happened). Come meet a fellow hacker and hear about his awesomeness at 5pm on Saturday. RSVP on Meet Up.

Sunday, October 13, 11 a.m.: Kids Science Dojo! Kids Science Dojo at Denhac is a weekly science class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will be learning science topics through cooperative projects, lectures, and safe experiments. Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian.

To help make a good class for both kids and their guardians as well as determining a good day and time for the class, our wonderful member and host Ashleigh has set up a couple of surveys. I encourage everyone who is considering the class at least read the description at the top of the Parents survey to give you information about Ashleigh and the class.

RSVP on Meet Up.

Sunday, October 13, 12 p.m.: Kids Coder Dojo! The Kids Coder Dojo at Denhac is a weekly computer programming class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will begin by using a free and open source visual programming language called Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/, available on Windows, MacOSX and Linux), and will be able to move on to more advanced languages as they progress at their own pace.

Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian (though guardians are encouraged to attend for all ages). Attendees should bring a laptop or netbook for each student they bring if they can (and you are encouraged to bring extras if possible for those without access to a computer). RSVP on Meet Up.

Tuesday, Oct 1, 8 p.m.: Radio Heads! This is a group created to explore different aspects of software defined radio. Topics to be addressed include both the reception and transmission of RF signals, the processing of data captured from the ether, cell phone networks, and ham radio. This is a group, not a class. There is no instructor. Just a handful of similarly minded people trying to learn something at roughly the same time. Kickin’ Up Some Dust!

Looks like some of the members have been quite the busy beavers making sure our visitors are safe by building a new hand rail for the upstairs area. It’s even more important now that we have more little hackers attending the space with the Kids Science and Coder Dojo classes. Here’s the progress so far and they’re hard at work today too…
