This week at denhac! Aug 3 – Aug 9

This week is certainly going to be a little quieter with a lot of people leaving for Defcon this week but it definitely won’t be boring. When the cats away, the mice will play…

Here’s what’s going on this week:

Sunday, August 3, 2014: {}

Monday, August 4th, 2014: {}

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014: Open House! Want to meet some tinkerers, hackers, makers or generally nerdy people? Do you need help on a project? Then you should stop by for Open House. There’s guaranteed to be a group of people hanging around, working on something or just socializing. We’re friendly, we promise. RSVP on Meet Up!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2014: {}

Thursday, August 7th, 2014: Work From Denhac Day! WFDD is for those of you who work remotely and need to get that weekly dose of social interaction. Load up your laptop, art project, or whatever you’re working on and join us! RSVP on Meet Up!

Thursday, August 7th, 2014: Young Makers Planning Meeting! Parents and kids (roughly ages 6-17), join us to plan the direction for a Denhac Maker Camp based loosely around the official Maker Camp curriculum. Especially with the loss of our Coder Dojo and Science Dojo, we’d like to establish a meetup targeted specifically at all our younger makers and hackers. We will have a fun activity from the Maker Camp for kids to work on while parents discuss days, times, frequency, topics, etc. for what they’d like to see from a denhac offering. If you’re not able to attend, you can also submit your preferences and ideas to Robb (robb.hendershot@gmail.com) or Heidi (heidih@gmail.com).

We have received a fun box of gear from Make and will have that out to look through (soldering kits and irons, Makey Makey, Arduino UNOs, a stack of kid-oriented books, tees and stickers, etc). It’s really a great program and next summer we’d like to try implementing it from the beginning of the summer. The Maker Camp curriculum can be viewed here: http://makercamp.com/summer-2014/schedule/ though we are not constricted by it. It’s also almost over for the summer so we can pick and choose the projects and “field trips” we like, and add new content where we want it.

You can join the discussion on the ‘denhac – Young Makers’ G+ page now! https://plus.google.com/115102138625157796039/about

RSVP on Meet Up!

Friday, August 8th, 2014: Game Night! It’s the end of the week so it’s time to cut loose! What better way than Game Night? The house favorite seems to be Cards Against Humanity but recently there have been talks of putting together a poker game. We’re open to anything, really. RSVP on Meet Up!

Saturday, August 9th, 2014: Open House! This is for those of you who don’t have time to stop by during the week. Our doors are open from 12 P.M. to 5 P.M. (at least) for everyone to stop by and check us out, get help on a project, socialize, or whatever you like. We’re easy-going like that. We’ve even been known to have impromptu cook-outs.

Saturday, August 9th, 2014: Nerdy Knitting Circle! This is the inaugural meeting of the Nerdy Knitting (and crochet!) Circle! Surely there are members and significant others of members who enjoy the fiber arts. So, we invite you to join us to talk about nerdy things while working on your latest knit or crochet creation. No age or skill restrictions. Bring something you’re working on or something you want to show off.

We may make this a recurring event depending on the turnout this weekend.

We hope to see you there! RSVP on Meet Up!

Denhac is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of technology, art, DIY, and craft-related classes for all ages, and survives on donations and membership dues. Special Effects Make Up 101, Take 2

I forgot to post a class! We have ANOTHER awesome class for this Saturday. Immediately following Mod Craft 102, we will be having Special Effects Make Up 101.

This class is geared more for beginners but anyone with experience can come. Be prepared as this is a hands on class and make up will be applied! If you have sensitive skin, lotion is a good idea to put on your arms.

Latex will be used so if you have a latex allergy, this class may not be right for you, but you’re welcome to spectate.

A $5 donation for supplies is recommended but not required.

Exciting new events!

We have two very exciting events coming up!

Saturday, July 12, 2014, 2:00PM: Hack the Space Day, Part Deux! Take Two. We tried a second Hack the Space day but it didn’t go as well as planned so we’re giving it another shot. This time it’s really important we get as many members involved as possible. RSVP on Meet Up.

Monday, July 14, 2014 All Day: GrillPFM Following hack the space day on 7/12, special guests at Denhac for Monday, 7/14.  Our tentative partner organization for the LPFM radio station – Open Media Foundation – will send a few of their representatives to meet with our interested board members to discuss our proposed partnership.

The primary purpose of the meeting is to discuss fundraising strategies together with Sabrina from Brown Paper Tickets, who will be in town for a radio conference that weekend.  Her organization sponsored the National Radio Day at Denhac about a year ago, and they promote community radio in Seattle and across the nation.

Burgers and drinks available for any members interested in catching up and listening in, or for anyone who happens to be working on projects while we’re there. :)

We have things for sale! It’s all for a good cause. CONSUME!

I am pleased to announce the return of shirts to the space! We’re offering the design that has been available previously as well as the old-school original denhac logo design.

Shirts are a flat $15 + S/H, and the profit from the sales goes back into denhac to pay for the space to stay open and for improvements. Eventually we hope to have a couple on hand in the space, but this is what we have for now.

Thanks to the generous help of Thom Strimbu, we can now offer shirts on an on-demand basis. He’s been awesome and is willing to help us out and deserves a round of applause.

So if you’re interested in them, the link is below.

Additionally, stickers have been printed by Stickermule and will be available for $1 a piece at the space on July 10th.

The host military base for the Atlas E program’s command and control was located at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. There were a total of four Atlas E sites in Weld County. This particular missile site was deactivated in 1965 and was turned over to Weld County. Tours include walking through the missile bay, generator room, crew quarters and the command center of the once active missile site. The Civil Defense section is available to demonstrate how the site was once equipped as a fall-out shelter during the Cold War.

Sunday, June 15, 2014, 11AM: Kids’ Science Dojo! Kids’ Science Dojo at Denhac is a weekly science class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will be learning science topics through cooperative projects, lectures, and safe experiments. Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian.

To help make a good class for both kids and their guardians as well as determining a good day and time for the class, our wonderful member and host Ashleigh has set up a couple of surveys. I encourage everyone who is considering the class at least read the description at the top of the Parents survey to give you information about Ashleigh and the class.

Sunday, June 15, 2014, 12PM: Kids’ Coder Dojo! The Kids’ Coder Dojo at Denhac is a weekly computer programming class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will begin by using a free and open source visual programming language called Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/, available on Windows, MacOSX and Linux), and will be able to move on to more advanced languages as they progress at their own pace.

Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian (though guardians are encouraged to attend for all ages). Attendees should bring a laptop or netbook for each student they bring if they can (and you are encouraged to bring extras if possible for those without access to a computer). RSVP on Meet Up!

Hack the Space Day! This Saturday! 5-31-14

In an attempt to clean and organize the space, this Saturday we’re hosting our first Hack the Space Day! We’ll be serving free burgers and hot dogs *BYOB*. Everyone is welcome to stop by and we encourage you to help out but it’s not required. By the end of the day we hope to have junk removed, everything else put away, and processes in place to keep the space cleaner. Who knows what shenanigans we might get into along the way. We hope to see you there! RSVP on Meet Up!
