This week at denhac! February 10 – February 16

Finally some relief from this unusually chilly weather! Now that it’s safe to come out of hibernation, here’s what we have going on this week:

Monday, February 10:

Tuesday, February 11, 8 p.m.: Locksport and Open House! Learn a new skill and meet new people. This is the best night of the week to come check out the space and get a tour and since it’s the second Tuesday of the month it’s also Locksport (the recreation or sport of defeating locking systems) night! It’s is free and open to the public. Don’t have tools? No problem! We have a few house sets of picks and plenty of locks to go around. You have no reason not to come out.

Wednesday, February 12:

Thursday, February 13, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.:  Work from Denhac Day! Does working remotely leave you feeling lonely? Do you need a source for human interaction that you so desperately crave? Well pack up your laptop and come hang out this Thursday for Work from Denhac Day. WFDD is open to everyone so join us!

Friday, February 14, 8 p.m.: Valentines Game Night! Don’t spend this Valentine’s Day alone! Come to Game Night instead! Or what could be better than bringing your date to your favorite hackerspace? If you said ‘nothing’ then you’re right! Bringing a game is encouraged but not required. We hope to see you!

Saturday, February 15, 12 p.m.: Open House! If you’ve been wanting to come check us out but don’t have time during the week then you’re in luck because we have a second weekly open house every Saturday from 12 p.m. to ??? As long as there’s a member in the space you’re welcome to come on in and work on a project or just hang out.

Sunday, February 16, 11 a.m.: Kids’ Science Dojo! Kids Science Dojo at Denhac is a weekly science class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will be learning science topics through cooperative projects, lectures, and safe experiments. Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian.

To help make a good class for both kids and their guardians as well as determining a good day and time for the class, our wonderful member and host Ashleigh has set up a couple of surveys. I encourage everyone who is considering the class at least read the description at the top of the Parents survey to give you information about Ashleigh and the class.

Sunday, February 16, 12 p.m.: Kids’ Coder Dojo! The Kids Coder Dojo at Denhac is a weekly computer programming class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will begin by using a free and open source visual programming language called Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/, available on Windows, MacOSX and Linux), and will be able to move on to more advanced languages as they progress at their own pace.

Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian (though guardians are encouraged to attend for all ages). Attendees should bring a laptop or netbook for each student they bring if they can (and you are encouraged to bring extras if possible for those without access to a computer).

Denhac is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of technology, art, DIY, and craft-related classes for all ages, and survives on donations and membership dues.  As with (almost) all Denhac classes, attendance is free of charge and membership is not required. Donations are strongly encouraged.
