You guys! Spring finally sprung! Last week was the first week we didn’t get an appreciable amount of snow and that means with warmer weather Denhac’s set to get even busier and more awesome. Here’s what we’ve got for you this week (and beyond).
Tuesday, May 14, 8 p.m: Locksport! – Our monthly meet up for lockpicking enthusiasts led by the infamous Legion. All skill levels are welcome. If I can do it, so can you. This is always a good time. RSVP on Meet Up.
Tuesday, May 14, 8 p.m: Weekly Open House. RSVP on Meet Up.
Thursday, May 16, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m: Work from Denhac Day – Work remotely? Need a little human interaction? Grab your laptop and join us for Work from denhac days. RSVP on Meet Up.
Friday, May 17, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m: dc303. The local defcon group for Denver. I dunno exactly what they do. They’re very serious. They kinda scare me. Naw, they’re good guys. Uh…I think. Mostly. Tilver’s nice in any event. So if you’re interested in Capture The Flag (CTF) type stuff, stop by. I’m fairly certain no one there has eaten a human liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Uh…fairly certain.
Saturday, May 18, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m, in the classroom: Wooly Makes for Noobz. Our lovely and talented Patricia will be in the house teaching us all the art of crochet. This class is geared towards people who have never crocheted or haven’t crocheted in a long time. We’ll go over how to start a project, how to finish off a project, how to do a slip knot, basic stitches, how to start a new row, how to crochet in the round, and she’ll do her best to answer questions anyone has above and beyond what’s covered. Attendants are also encouraged to bring projects they need help with or want to show off.
What to bring: Yarn and crochet hook. Red Heart is a very good and cheap yarn. Please avoid very dark or very light/pastel colors. Variegated and medium color yarns are preferred to make the stitches easier to see. You can check the yarn packaging for the recommended crochet hook size. RSVP on Meet Up.
Saturday, May 18, Noon – 5 p.m: Open House and BBQ. Everyone welcome!
Saturday, May 18, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m: Low Power FM/Community Radio Planning Meeting. We’re looking for folks interested in helping to create a new FM Community Radio station here in Denver. The FCC is granting licenses, for the first time in decades, for 100 watt (3-7 mile radius) non-profit community FM radio stations.
The window opens, for a short time, October 15th of this year (2013).
We’re going to apply. If you’d like to be involved (creating content, helping to run the station, RF engineering, or whatever else you can think up that might make a great community radio station even better), come to this meeting. RSVP on Meet Up.
Sunday, May 19, 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m: Kids Coder Dojo. The Kids Coder Dojo at Denhac is a computer programming class designed for elementary through high school-aged kids. Students will begin by using a free and open source visual programming language called Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/, available on Windows, MacOSX and Linux), and will be able to move on to more advanced languages as they progress at their own pace.
Attendees under the age of 13 are required to be accompanied by a designated guardian (though guardians are encouraged to attend for all ages). Attendees should bring a laptop or netbook for each student they bring if they can (and you are encouraged to bring extras if possible for those without access to a computer).
For this event, students are encouraged to come with a toy or other object that they would like to incorporate into a game. We will have a green screen set up to take pictures of the object in different positions for simple animation! (Nothing reflective, since it will effect the green-screen). RSVP on Meet Up.
Saturday, May 25, Noon – 5 p.m: Open House and BBQ. Everyone welcome! Since this is Memorial Day weekend and lots of people are traveling, camping, and just generally living it up, we won’t be holding any classes. However! The space will be open, as usual, on Saturday for our weekly open house and BBQ. More details on other special happenings that day will be announced soon!
Friday, May 31 – Sunday, June 2: Denver Comic Con and Open House! Denhac has been invited by Denver Comic Con to host a fan table at this year’s event. If you’re planning to be at Con, please do be sure to stop by our table and say hello and then come by the space and take a tour. Or, if you aren’t going to be at Con, come hang out at the space and geek out with us.
Denhac is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of technology and craft-related classes for all ages, and survives on donations and membership dues. As with (almost) all Denhac classes, attendance is free of charge and membership is not required. Donations are strongly encouraged. Come check us out! We’d love to meet you!
THIS JUST IN!!!
The SeeMeCNC guys came by the space just this evening and we were so impressed by their product – the Rostock MAX – we acquired one! It’s a kit that we’ll need to assemble and so we’re just now working out the logistics for getting it put together but very soon Denhac will have a printer capable of printing 3D objects using a machine with these standard features (from the SeeMeCNC website):
- Over 1300 in² of build volume (11″ Diameter by over 14 3/4″ height)
- Your model is stationary throughout the entire build process, less prone to print failures
- High quality Laser cut, Injection molded and CNC machined parts all made by us right here in the USA
- Comes set up for 1.75mm filament
- Uses high torque NEMA 17 stepper motors
- Comes standard with a .5mm nozzle for easy printing, but can use our other sizes as well
- 450w PSU delivers more than enough power for the heated bed, hot end and accessories you could add
- RAMBo by UltiMachine electronics
- Positioning accuracy of .02mm (20 microns) *
- Speed in excess of 300mm/s in all motion, not just X/Y moves ***
- Tinker-friendly electronics and hardware. Many extra places to add your own mods to both
- Filament spool holder incorporated into the machine (for 1lb or 1kg spools only)
- Easily upgradeable to dual-extrusion in the future. RAMBo supports dual hotends and extruders stock
Holy smokes! BOUNCE! BOUNCE! BOUNCE!
